Yep I'm reading random blogs again and you know what? About every 3rd one I've read the author has referred to themselves as being a geek. Not just in passing, they say things like "I am such a geek" and "I'm so geeky" etc. These people say it like its cool to be a geek, like it is different. Sorry, so what if you like computers more than "normal people" and so what if "normal people" think you are "weird" because you carry lots of "tech gadgets" around, which probably consists of some sort of convergence device phone type thing and a laptop/iPod/PDA. Big fucken deal. Everyone is doing it. Also just because you have a Mac and a lot of other people don't, doesn't mean you are "geekier", it just means you either A) have more money to blow on shit or B) you bought it cause it looks cool. (TIMEOUT: Lets give the whole "better quality" debate a miss for the moment shall we? :) ) You didn't buy that shit for some particular use that only a Mac can do. Don't get me wrong, I think Macs are pretty cool and would love to one day have one of my own to play with, but don't sit around yabbering on how Macs can do so much more shit than PCs/Windows, because when it comes down to it, you are WRONG! Oh noes! Your geeky powers are dwindling!
Seriously, if you call yourself a geek on your blog (I'm talking constantly on your "about me" page) you are probably not a geek at all, cause all those real geeks actually hate being called a geek.

loser is more apporiate for me.
my new computer is the first mac i've ever had and i'm finding it really hard to adjust. i'm finding myself going to do certain things automatically and the end result is frustration.
unfortunately, i am not 'geeky' (heh) enough to know why one is better over the other. there is an apple centre at the ANU and students there get a huge discount. so it seemed like a good choice!
Macs are fine computers really, I just hate people who get superiority complexes from owning them. It's just a computer people.
How much discount do they get at ANU? I think you can get 5 or 10% anywhere for being a student. Maybe they have some cool agreement with the uni to get students there more!

But I agree with you there serp with everything being Apple. It's really amazing how Apple have grown from a 2nd rate computer maker who happened to get a mention on Forrest Gump, to sending Gorillaz mainstream (via their iPod ad ages ago) and making sentances composed of single words with full stops after them cool, to being the market juggernaut they are today. They also have millions of people around the world (or is it millions on the morning trains I take every day) thinking anything white thats usable by a technoprobe, no matter the quality, is hip, funky and cool. Or black. As long as it has that little shadow/shine photo-edited across it.
I dont like it. (Yeah can the Pauline references :) )
It's marketing thats worked so well, that it makes me feel sick. I think the competition, iRivers, Toshibas, are all awesome units. They look better than iPods! They all work on the same bloody $2 mass produced outta Taiwan MPEG decoder chip anyway! I still don't know how they get away with ripping people for $400 for a $2 MPEG decoder and a ROM chip and a small (notebook?) hard drive with a capacity that was standard in the late 1990's.
And why is life so cool now? There's even a brand called LIFE. Bring back the life sucks days. And the big arse DJ headphones people used to have drooped over their neck, heavy enough to work their owners' back muscles and give them a ripped back. Now its all crappy little white buds.

Oh, and iRivers support Ogg Vorbis! Just for that reason, I'd buy one of them over an iPod.

oh noes.... i had a powerbook and sold it and had two ipods.. broken both of them (why cant i drop a hard drive onto my desk every other day and expect it to work?) :(
you are right tho, its now cool to be a geek and most of these new geeks dont have a clue. i bought the apple stuff out of curiousity not for social stature. then there is the entire 'new' blog culture.. nevermind thats what the idea of the internet to begin with... shame the content isn't between academics/researchers as originally intended.. the internet might be worth something..
And its okay for corey to rant at the moment.. he is having withdrawal and is just a bit more narky than normal.. haha
