Yay the Internet is back and it is fast! getting about 789KB/s down on average, which is pretty much flat out for a standard ADSL 1 modem. Now I gotta rush out and buy a billion ADSL2+ for the 2200-2300KB/s goodness! (although it is not like I really need that speed, I chew through the quota just going 150KB/s).

Well it has benefits for you guys cause you are sharing a connection. Also the x4 upload speed really helps!

I guess it is also handy for when you want something RIGHT NOW and you don't have to wait all night for it.

Also, you back at work yet?

Heh, I've had 1400KB/s for over six years now

Only from boring Aussie sites with shit content though :P Seriously, I must be the only person in my area using BPC, 'cause I get the 'theoretical max' line speed fairly consistently. Upload's a cunt though.

It sucks though, cause you should be getting way faster speeds than that!

And the whole upload counting towards quota is just stupid.

i just got adsl 2+ thingy, connects at 17mbit up/1mbit down so can't be too far from the exchange... not too bad..

Only got 500kb/sec from the iinet mirror though for some iso's so will have to do some more testing >:)

Certainly different days than the old 28/33.6/56k #mp3 days ;)

You're in Corey's place now, right hal? Isn't that like two blocks away from an exchange?

yeah not far from all the info I have, based on the connection speed, probably less than 2km. Should be able to do some decent testing on the weekend. I copped out and got the cheaper billion adsl 2+ modem though, the chipset is theoretically limited to only 14mbit but that should still be good for ~ 1.5mb/sec. Know of any decent sites that can pump out that kind of speed?

hal is on the Hawthorn exchange, which is the giant building with the dish on top of it next to swinburne and glenferrie train station. I guess thats like under 2 city blocks? It would be stil under a Kilometre is the crow flies.

Which billion do you have hal? I was thinking of getting one but if I do I want to get one that will take advantage of the full 24mbit.

Also #mpeg3 was where it was at :)

I got the billion 7202G - $130 with 4 port switch, 802.11g, adsl2+ modem. Good value as I have not had one problem with it, unlike the netgear and linksys gear I have had in the past.

The only downfall is the chipset reportedly can only handle 14mbit throughput. I have yet to really test, I am only connected at 17mbit anyway. To get a billion with the same features that can reportedly do the full 24mbit you are looking at an extra $100. When it sits idle 90% of the time I couldn't justify the cost :)

Netgear sucks elephant shit! I'm using it currently at my sis's who has Optus cable. It drops out all the time, and signal quality is good-excellent always. Just like the AP we had at work, it was flaky as a fish.

I had to explain to my other sister whose house I was sitting (with the pool etc) that there is internet access other than dialup. Argh for my family being so illiterate! Anyway I am getting her on ye-cheapo-shito 400mb 512/128 iPrimus adsl1 for $29/mo. She didnt want to spend any more on internet access/month.

400 meg??? She'd probably use 400 meg on dialup a month just reading email spams and checking the news/weather :)

Now she has ADSL she'll probably go way over the limit, hope they just do shaping once you are over the limit!
